The Amelioration of Tron
I've been playing tron for 3 year, and I'm pissed.
What am I pissed at, you might ask?
Well, its both a long and short story. The short story is that I'm pissed at the state of tron. The long story is below (you can skip this if you want to get to the topic in the title of the thread).
You see, when I started out playing Fasttrack, I had a desire to become the best. I watched players like Fox, Zero, Tim Minsy, fizz, and Faze, and not only wanted to be like them, but to beat them. So I set out on my journey to achieve my goal. I started out by joining XD, then began playing and watching as many 1v1s as possible. I grew as a player, and 8 months after I had joined, I had reached the point where I could consistently beat anyone most of the time. I felt pretty satisfied with myself, but after a number of months, I grew somewhat bored. By the end of that summer, eR had died, and there wasn't much for me to do. The only active FTer besides me that was reasonably good at 1v1 was fizz (Code at that time), and he too was growing wary of tron. When school started, I took an 8 month hiatus from tron.
When I returned, FT wasn't too much different from when I left it, except for a few relatively new players that liked to form clans of their own. Still wanting to return XD to its, while brief, former glory, I decided to start up XD again with FoRt. This time, however, I was a leader form the start, and could take control of the clan in ways I couldn't in the past. I helped to start up XD2 again, the training division of XD. I was once a part of XD2, and quickly became a full clan member, but never got to actually train anyone. After I started up XD2 again, I soon realized a problem: there were few, if any, players in FT that wanted to commit to a clan, much less a training division of one. We only managed to get one player into XD2 (Glenno), and he eventually left after we didn't do much training with him. After another death of XD, another rebirth, and another death, I was finally done with XD.
During my time with XD, I realized that FT needed more players, especially dedicated ones. I thought that I could get these players from other gametypes, such as DF, sumo, and fort. So when Durf proposed the idea of a scripted FT 1v1 server, I was overjoyed. It would bring legitimacy to FT by allowing for an official way to compete with another FTer. A few months later, I opened this very forum, and soon after, proposed the Fork. I thought, after all of this work, people would finally realize FT as a legitimate game type, and begin spending part of their time in the FT server as playing matches of sumo and fort. Leading up to the First Fork, activity in the FT server noticeably increased. Turnout at the Fork wasn't exceptional, but it had an impact on FT, as people became more competitive leading up to the Fork to get themselves in shape, similar to what people are doing leading up to this Fork.
However, after the First Fork concluded, and the activity from it died down, I noticed that there were essentially no new players in the server that had migrated from other game types. In fact, there was little change in FT at all, spare the mild activity the FTL was generating. I began to think about why this was, and realized that I had incorrectly identified the root cause of the lack of committed FT players. While getting players to share their playing time across multiple servers should be a goal for the future of tron, I wasn't going to uproot sumo and fort players and get them to join FT after a simply tourney. The real cause of the problem was a simple lack of players on Tron. And without players, there is little new competition in Fasttrack. My ego makes me want competition, and this was the driving force behind all that I had done for FT.
So I began to think of ways to solve this problem of a lack of players. I spent a few minutes thinking, then decided to look on the forums to see if anyone had any good ideas. It turns out, there was an active topic on the very subject of the lack of players, although the forum thread mainly focused on fort and Ladle. I monitored the thread for a while, and eventually another one with a similar subject popped up. I became hopeful for change, anxiously awaiting a group of players to stand up and dedicate themselves to improving Tron and getting more people to download the game. However, this is not what became of it. The threads, it turned out, devolved into arguments over whats wrong with tron, blaming various people for not doing something about it, and criticizing any idea that someone put forth that wasn't the same as their idea. It could hardly be called constructive, and not a single person stepped forth and took action on any of the various things identified as wrong with tron.

So here I am today. Tron is still in its half-dead half-alive state that it has seemed to be in for my entire 3 year career with the game. The community has done nothing to revive the game, spare maybe a few more people willing to help out a noob or two learn how to double bind. And this, this is why I am pissed. The game is dead in the water, and little to no work has been done to give it some air. The devs say they have no time, and the players say its the devs job to fix it.
So fuck them.
I firmly believe that we, the Fasttrack community, can make a truly significant difference. I might be totally, utterly wrong. This entire thing could end up bringing zero change to Tron, and I accept that. However, I am going to give it my all, and hope you guys do as well. What I propose, is to generate an abundance of ideas, narrow these down to a few strong ones, and take action on these ideas. The sole focus of these ideas is to increase the size of the Tron community, and thus, increase the size of the Fasttrack community.
What I ask of you
I ask you, as a member of the Fasttrack community, to generate as many ideas as possible that would lead us to achieving the focus of this project. Do not discuss what is wrong with Tron, as the Armagetron forums have done enough of that already. I am not posting this on the Armagetron forums because I do not want the negativity that those forums emit. Do not shoot down ideas during the brainstorming part of this project. We will decide what ideas work and what don't after we have created a sufficiently sized list.
You are allowed to propose any idea that you wish, as long as it contributes to the focus of the project, and doesn't require spending money.
